Why should I use a "Stationer" for my printing needs?

Stationers are located in visible store fronts offering a wide range of printing services usually not all found under one roof. What types of printing are available at Saint Clair?

Saint Clair provides in-house laser and ink-jet printing and machine calligraphy for casual invitations and stationery. For more substantial occasions such as weddings, Mitzvahs and distinctive personalized stationery, we represent leading printing and paper companies who offer the following printing processes:

Engraving is a traditional printing process. Ink colors and images acquire a level of richness not possible with other printing methods due to high-pressure press technology, the opacity of the inks and the artistry of engraving dies. The end result is substantial and elegant.
Letterpress printing involves setting type and pressing it into paper. Currently experiencing a revival, letterpress is particularly effective when printing on handmade and other textured paper. This form of printing is generally not appropriate for business stationery.
Thermography simulates engraving. Letters are raised and have a “feel” to them. Heat is applied to a resin base to create this effect. Certain thermograph inks can be shiny and lose clarity and richness. Printing in thermograph inks is less expensive than engraving.
Flat-Printing is also known as lithography. This type of printing the least expensive form of printing. While adequate for casual invitations, it is generally not used for fine social and business stationery or invitations.

What is the difference between wood & cotton fiber?

Cotton or “rag” paper is generally considered to be the paper of choice for fine invitations and stationery. Made from ginned cotton, cotton fabric scraps from textile mills and recycled cuttings from the paper mills, 100% cotton paper is very malleable and ideally suited for engraving and letterpress. Properly processed, wood fiber has many of the same fine attributes of cotton paper. Only the most experienced stationer can tell the difference between the two fibers and we generally recommend that our clients focus on the vendor’s designs and the texture of the paper rather than the fiber used.
